Airbrush Makeup Mistakes and How to Fix Them

If you do your makeup almost every day, chances are pretty good you have had to wipe something off and start over. Some days, you might have to wipe EVERYTHING off and try again. And if you are anything like me, some days you just look in the mirror and decide to forgo the makeup – or leaving the house.

So today we are going to go over some common airbrush makeup mistakes and how to correct, or prevent, them.

Over and Under Spraying

You will hear it time and time again – with airbrush makeup, layers are key. We recommend starting with a light layer of foundation and letting it dry. If you want more, you can always add another layer, but that first layer might be all you need.

So what do you do if you have applied your primer and your foundation and you realize it’s too heavy? Start by removing the foundation with a damp rag or makeup wipe. Then refill your stylus, but this time practice spraying into a tissue.

-       Are you pulling back too much on the throttle? You should never apply makeup with the throttle pulled more than 1/3 of the way back.

-       Is there too much foundation in the cup? Four to six drops is customary for most people. You can always add more later, but it’s hard to stop spraying when you have too much in the cup.

-       Are you using too light a shade so you are overspraying? Make sure you have color matched your foundation properly. Getting some sun can change your skin tone, and so can spending a lot of time indoors. If you think your skin tone has changed, adjust your foundation accordingly.

Airbrush Stylus is Spattering

Was that too easy? Okay, here’s a harder one. What do you do if the airbrush is spattering makeup?

First, you should be cleaning your stylus after every use. When you are done applying your makeup, fill the cup on the stylus with water and spray into the sink (or a tissue) until it’s empty.

But build up does happen and can clog your stylus. To remedy this, take the stylus apart to clean it properly. Watch this video to learn how to do this properly.

Makeup is Just Not Staying Put

Gone are the days when you could just slap on some color and hope it lasts as long as you do. With the advances in cosmetics, it takes a bit more effort to get a long-lasting look, but it’s so worth it.

Making sure you let each layer dry before applying the next will also ensure that your makeup stays put and lasts all day and night. Makeup for When Youth is a Drawback

The first time I heard someone complain about looking too young, I laughed. After I rolled my eyes. Because when does any woman over the age of 21 complain about looking too young?

 

But then I started thinking back to when I was in my early 20s and trying to make it in the professional world.  I wore ill-fitting hand-me-down suits, too-dark pantyhose and no makeup. Is it any wonder I wasn’t taken as seriously as I wanted?

So for those ladies lucky enough to maintain their girlishness but still want to be as respected as their more mature colleagues, here are some tips for looking great without aging yourself.

Too Youthful Skin

Acne is a nearly universal plague, but if you already think you look too young, a rash of pimples on your face won’t help matters. Make sure you are cleaning your face every day and that you never, EVER sleep in your makeup. It might have been cute in college to show up to class in the remains of last night’s makeup, but that won’t fly in the real world.

If over the counter products just aren’t cutting it, see a dermatologist. Insurance might not kick in for the first few months of your new job, but going to interviews with a gigantic pimple on your nose won’t help you get that new job, either.

You Are Not Snow White

Signs of youth include a soft glow and a flush of the cheeks. Few early 20-somethings really need to wear blush, and if you do, use a very light hand. Nothing ages you more than badly applied blush – which can also make you look like you are playing in your mother’s makeup.

Also, going with a matte finish foundation (like our Matte line of airbrush foundations) will help lower the chances that someone asks you what high school you go to instead of what job you are interviewing for.

Avoid the Trends

Orange might be the trendy shade in makeup right now, but that doesn’t mean the workplace is where you should try it out. Stick with classic colors and styles when you apply your makeup to avoid looking too teeny bopper (this particular tip is less applicable to those in more creative industries such as fashion or beauty).

Overall, a youthful look is great, but looking like you are too young can be a drawback when trying to get a real-world job. Avoiding garish looks and focusing on your own natural beauty will help you reach those professional heights you deserve.

Natural Beauty with Airbrush Makeup

While it’s fun to dress up and get glam once in awhile, I have always been a big fan of the “less is more” mentality when it comes to makeup. I like to look and feel as if I can go from my home to the store to work to dinner without once having to change my eyeshadow or lipstick. Touch ups are fine, but I want to live my life and not be spending too much time on my makeup. 

Which is why we are going to go over some great tips for how to keep that natural look when you use airbrush makeup at home. (Don’t worry, we will discuss how to get those glam looks soon.) Airbrush makeup is easy to use everyday - check out the video below for more info.

The 3 Ps: Prep, Prep, Prep

The first step to having your own natural gorgeousness shine through is to make your skin as clean and refreshed as possible. This means treating acne (no popping!), washing off your makeup before you go to bed and always, always moisturizing.

If you have fine lines, treat them with retinols or whatever works for your skin type. If you have red skin from rosacea, treat it with medicated cleansers and moisturizers. If you have flaky skin, exfoliate. And so on. Taking care of your skin means less makeup, less stress about your appearance and just naturally makes you feel better about how you look.

Don’t Overdo It

Natural makeup means use the bare minimum to achieve the look you want.

Shades 1 & 2 Ultra Airbrush Foundation

Make sure your foundation is the right color for you – too light and you look ill; too dark and you look like a child playing with their mother’s makeup. You can always blend two foundations to make your perfect shade – for me, that means I blend Shades 1 and 2 Ultra to make my perfect foundation.

Airbrush Magic

When using airbrush makeup, the key is to think in layers. Light layers work better than one heavy one.

Start off with a layer of primer to help keep the foundation in place.  This also helps seal in the moisture in your skin, which in turn prevents dryness and flaking later in the day.

Use concealer or a lighter shade of foundation to cover up any blemishes you might have. Again, don’t go too heavy or you will draw more attention to those areas rather than conceal them.

Follow with a light layer of foundation – just enough to even out your skin tone. Be sure to blend towards your hairline and around your jaw.

If you need blush, apply a very light layer on just the apples of your cheeks. I don’t wear any because I have natural ruddy cheeks and adding more would just take away from that natural look I like so much.

For me, this is often enough. If I want to add mascara or lip color, I will apply those with a light hand, as well.

I know for some people a natural look does include the whole arsenal of eyeshadows, liners, blushes and bronzers, lipstick and lip gloss and all that. And it’s definitely possible to pull off, as we will discuss later. But for now, this a basic lesson in simple face makeup for everyday.

So, how do you do it?  

As usual, start with clean skin. Then take your Luminess concealer (or the shade of foundation from you color range that is a shade lighter than your everyday makeup) and apply a light coating to the area. Don’t overspray – just a light layer to create a neutral base for applying the next layer. Set with powder. 

Next, take your matching skin shade and apply another light layer to the area, blending outward to decrease visible edges. If you need more coverage, just be sure to let the first layers dry before applying the next. Continue until you have achieved the level of coverage you desire.
