They
say Spring is the season for renewal, but I disagree. I think you
should take any chance you get to shed your skin and start again.
Certainly the change from swimsuits to sweaters and green leaves to red
is reason enough to change up your look. For some reason, those beachy
looks just don’t look the same when you are out in the pumpkin patches.
So how do you change things up for fall?
Bring on the Glow
You might still have some of that tan you got over the summer, but the glow is going to fade. So what do you do? You fake it.
We
have a kit just for this, filled with a bottle of silver, gold and
copper metallic shimmer. It also comes with our brown eyeliner pen and
it’s marked down 65%.
Don’t let the metallic part of the name scare you -
these are very versatile.
You can use them as eyeshadows. You can
use them as bronzers or to contour your face. You can use them as
highlighters. It’s amazing what you can do with just a few drops in your
stylus!
We also have our airbrush essentials on sale. Full-size
bottles of Glow, Primer, Boost-It! and Minus-10, plus blush and bronzer -
only $10 each.
Glow does exactly what its name says it does - it
makes you glow. Use the bronzer and blush to enhance your look. You can
take your look from summer golden to winter light with these products.
Try Something New
We have some new products to play with!
You’ve tried our cream eyeshadows and the airbrush eyeshadows, but now we have gel eyeshadows!
These are a soft, creamy texture that goes on so smooth. And the
colors! There are some amazing options in these eyeshadows and right
now, we have them for only $12. Since the color is so rich and they last
so long, these little pots will see you through the season.
Fans of our lipsticks
were sad when we stopped carrying them. Well, turn those frowns upside
down because they are back and better than ever. Available in twelve
gorgeous shades, it will will be hard to choose just one. And at $12
each, you don’t have it. They are such beautiful colors and so lovely to
put on, but they won’t dry out your lips.
Don't Forget the Body
One way to get that summer tan to last longer is fake it with spray
tanner. But why go to a salon when you can do it at home? Right now, we
have our favorite Heiress System on sale along with a tanning upgrade
for only $139. This is one of the best deals we offer and the timing
couldn’t be better. Save money, look fabulous and be ready in minutes
with this deal. What more could you need?
Well, you might want to
add some mascara to your look, or maybe you need another stylus. You
might like to use lip gloss with those fabulous new lipsticks, or maybe
you just need some more foundation. Whatever else you might need, we
have you covered in this sale. So go check it out! And enjoy the gorgeous colors of autumn with a renewed you!

Think Like an Artist
Applying makeup is one of those things that some people pick
up instantly and others struggle for years to figure out. You might have
started out playing with your mother’s makeup or you might have read beauty
magazines until you were old enough to try it on your own. You might even still
feel like you are playing in your mother’s makeup and just can’t quite get the
hang of it. Let’s see if we can’t fix that.
First… Ignore Photoshop
Beauty magazines are wonderful sources for advice and
inspiration. Personally, I am especially fond of Allure and Glamour for the
amazing information they have. But don’t let their photos discourage your
makeup efforts. Even if the photos haven’t been retouched by a computer, they
are often done with and by professionals. That’s why their pictures of smoky
eye makeup look so great – they are experts!
So what should you do? Be gentle on yourself and remember
that you are A, not in a magazine and B, not an expert. Your smoky eye only has
to look good to you. It does not have to match the photos. Also, practice! No
one gets it right the first time, and even if they do, they rarely find
consistency so soon. It takes practice to get anything right, including makeup.
Second… Find Your Light
Every photographer will tell you that the secret to a great
photo is the light. Painters would tell you the same thing – the right
light lets you see colors accurately and doesn’t highlight flaws. If your
makeup space is too dark or overly bright, your makeup is not going to look the
same when you leave. This also means you won’t get the look you are trying for
since your conditions are different.
So find your light. Do your makeup next to a window with
natural light. Or change the bulbs you use to a softer white. Some office
workers apply their makeup at their desk – that way they know exactly how it’s
going to look all day while at the office. Find the light that lets you see the
best without over doing it. You can’t create without seeing the tools properly.
Third… Use the Right Tools
Yes, you could probably paint a masterpiece with the cheap
little brushes that come in your kid’s watercolor set, but I can guarantee it
will take you longer and would probably still be better with quality brushes.
Finding the right tool for the job is a very important part of creating
anything, including your makeup look.
So double check your tools. Make sure your airbrush stylus
is cleaned and working properly. Wipe the lids of your pots and bottles.
Airbrush makeup is wonderful and easy to apply, but only if you take care of
your tools.
Fourth… Learn From the Best
You might hear about well-known artists who were self-taught
and abhor art classes. But those people are few and far between. Learning the
basics about any craft is an important part of mastering it.
So take a look at the tutorials you see and learn from them.
The pictures and descriptions (or videos) might have elements you already know,
but you also might learn something new. Go get a makeover at a beauty counter
once in awhile just to see if they can teach you a new technique you would never
have thought of. Always be willing to learn.
Fifth… You Will Know It When You See It
Plenty of people will tell you that they don’t know how to
define art, but they know it when they see it. Your makeup should be the same
way. Don’t follow anyone’s lead if it doesn’t work for you. Don’t think you
look good with blush? Don’t use it. Love to use bright colors on your eyes? Go
for it! Swear peach is your color? Wear it.
So keep in mind when you see tutorials and the like that
makeup is as individual as you are. That
model might look trendy with a bleached buzz cut and black lips, but that
doesn’t mean you should do it if it doesn’t work for you.
Learning how to wear makeup doesn’t take a MFA. Just take
your time, be patient with yourself and think like an artist.

What Can Airbrush Makeup Do?
Every makeup application has its pros and cons. Whether you
use brushes, sponges or your fingers; whether you use creams, gels or powders;
whether you use a little or a lot – every makeup method has it’s benefits and
drawbacks. So what about airbrush makeup?
Only Airbrush Makeup Can…
Smooth Airbrush Finish |
…Be blended perfectly.
Applying makeup with an airbrush allows you maximum control and
coverage. Your stylus and compressor work together to produce microparticles
that blend together to form you perfect color. If you use brushes or sponges,
you are going to get an uneven amount of makeup that does blend out as smooth
as with an airbrush. After all, you wouldn’t paint a Mercedes with a brush,
would you?
…Give you a natural looking blush. With regular foundations,
you have to apply the blush on top of your base layers. This means it can be
difficult to control the amount of blush you use. If you want a more a natural
flush to your cheeks, apply your airbrush blush UNDER your foundation. This is
only possible with airbrush makeup. By applying your airbrush brush and then
your foundation, the blush looks like it’s a natural part of your face and not
added after the fact.
…Give you a natural looking glow that hydrates. Again, with
regular foundations, makeup has to be applied in a certain order. Airbrush
makeup gives you more options. Start with a primer and your color-matched
foundation, then apply your moisturizer OVER the foundation. This will give you
a soft, dewy finish without smudging your makeup. This is especially helpful
for those with dry or sensitive skin.
A stylus is cleaner than a brush. |
Airbrush Makeup and Clearer Skin
You have been told since you were a teen to not touch your
face or you might cause pimples. This is still true. The more we touch our
faces, the more we transfer dirt and oils to our pores. This causes acne and
other skin problems. Even if you clean your makeup brushes and applicators
every day, you are still working with tools that are going to collect the very
things we want to keep away from our skin.
That’s part of what makes airbrush makeup so special. By
using the stylus and not a brush, you are only applying makeup to your face,
not bacteria. This prevents acne, but it can also prevent fine lines from
forming as you rub and pull on your skin as you apply your makeup. Stay looking
younger, longer.
Any Drawbacks?
Of course there are drawbacks to nearly anything. An at-home
airbrush makeup kit can start off costing more than traditional makeup. And it
takes some getting used to be able to pull off a flawless finish in a small
amount of time. It’s also not as portable as other makeup.
But that’s why it helps to sign up for the Luminess Air
emails so you can find out about our latest deals, hear about our latest
products and watch our most updated tutorials. To be added to our email list,
leave a comment on this blog post.

Eyeglasses and Eye Makeup
Glasses are worn by every type of person – the hipster and the punk, the businesswoman and the teacher, the mom and the child. Figuring out how to apply your eye makeup is a dilemma faced by nearly every woman who wears glasses.
And the advice out there can be confusing – don’t wear too much, don’t wear too little, etc. Lots of advice, but what works for someone else might not work for you. So here are some suggestions and ideas to help you find the eye makeup look that works for you.
Notice Your Glasses
First, take a look at yourself in the mirror with your
glasses on. Notice whether the frames actually look good on you or you have
just been wearing them for so long you don’t know what else to do. If you need
new frames, consider taking your prescription someplace with some funky frames
or just more updated styles. You can do this online or at an actual storefront.
Flattering glasses are the first step to a flattering makeup look.
Next, notice if the frames include your eyebrows or hide
them, make your eyes look smaller or bigger, are thick- or thin-framed. Does
the color make your eyes glow? Do they create shadows on your face? These are
all factors that can influence how you apply your makeup.
Notice Your Eyes
If you naturally wear brighter eyeshadow, there's no reason to stop just because you have glasses. Just keep in mind that
your glasses can contrast (red frames might be a bit of overkill with red
eyeshadow) as well as conceal.
But you don’t have change how you apply makeup just because you wear
glasses. If you don’t regularly wear eyeliner, that’s fine. If you usually only
wear one color eyeshadow, don’t change it. The only thing that really needs to
change is the amount applied.
If you have small eyes and generally only apply a small line
to your upper lids, keep doing that, just make it a bit darker or thicker. If
you regularly wear a smoky eye, keep going, just double the liner. If you
always curl your lashes and wear mascara, keep doing it – just make sure it’s
dry before you put on your glasses or
you might have issues with the lenses getting smudged.
Don’t Forget to Notice Your Eyebrows
Are you eyebrows covered up by your frames? Or are your
frames highlighting them?
Groomed eyebrows are key to a great makeup look. Make sure you remove any stray hairs between your brows. Unless it's a straggler, don't pluck under your brows. If you need help knowing how to shape your brows, see a professional who can go over the basics with you and show you the shape that works best for you (again, it's your face, so don't just go with what's trendy if it doesn't fit YOU).
Notice These Tips
- Thicker frames means thicker liner. Thinner frames mean thinner liner. Generally, try to match your eyeliner thickness to your frames' thickness. This is done most easily with a gel or pen eyeliner. Check out our eyeliners for easy-to-apply, long-lasting eyeliner pens that apply easily.
- Concealer and/or highlighter are more important with glasses because of the focus drawn to that area of the face. If you naturally have shadows under your eyes, small eyes that disappear behind your frames or fine lines, you want to make sure you address those issues. Use concealer on those shadows (or where the frame’s shadows fall) and lightly address those fine lines (Minus-10 and a bit of airbrush makeup can do wonders here).
- BONUS TIP for smaller eyes: Use a dark/thick liner on the top lashes, then use a nude/light liner underneath. This will brighten up your eyes and make them a little more noticeable. Add a bit of mascara (curling them first) to complete the look.
- Treat your glasses like an accessory. If you like to look serious and professional, chose classic wire rims. Like a little drama? Chose a dramatic color or ones with rhinestones. Variations on the cat's eye tend to look good on a most people and can be subtle or dramatic depending on your desire.
- Blush and highlighter can be used to make your eyes and glasses don’t just fade away. Use blush or bronzer to deepen your cheeks and highlighter to bring out your eyes.
- Don’t neglect the rest of your face. Just because you focused on your eyes doesn’t mean you should just let the rest slide. If you used concealer or foundation around your eyes, continue to do so on the rest of your face. Even if you just use a neutral lipstick, make sure you address your lips, too. But don’t be afraid to wear something bright. In fact, if you tend to do a neutral eye, use your mouth as an opportunity to try something new – like the plums that are in season for fall.
Whatever you do, whatever frames you wear or however your
face is shaped, make your makeup choices based on what works for you. Beauty is
in the eye of the beholder – but the only eyes that matter are yours.

Finding Makeup Inspiration in Everyday Life
Some mornings it’s just tough to get out of bed. The same old routine has you worn down and
you just don’t feel like putting on the same outfit, doing the same makeup and
heading out the door. Shopping for something new doesn’t help, eating doesn’t
help and you can’t just give up and go back to bed. So what do you do?
You have to find inspiration somehow, so start looking
around you.
Think about your favorite piece of jewelry. Imagine putting
it on. Is it a ring? A necklace? Is it silver or gold? Antique or modern? Does
it have red, blue, green stones? Use that piece as a stepping stone to your
look. Decide to wear something sparkly to go with the metal of your chosen
piece. Match your lips to the ruby in your ring or match your eyes to the
stones in your necklace. Or contrast it – wear ultra modern colors and shapes
with that vintage string of pearls. Whatever you do, remember what you love
about that piece and use it to revive your look.
Or, look outside your window. See those gorgeous flowers you
planted last spring? Or the hazy blue sky hanging above the building next door?
Maybe the trim on the house next to you was just painted a brilliant color.
The key to changing up your look and feeling fresh again is to find something around you that makes you think about things a little different. Even if that day’s look doesn’t turn out, at least it gets you thinking about new ways of applying your makeup.
If you are more the planning type and not really up for
spontaneous make overs, then start looking in magazines or on websites for the
looks that inspire you. Do you just love Jennifer Aniston’s hair, Gwen Stefani’s
signature red lips or Katy Perry’s fearlessness when it comes to her
appearance? Then start collecting pictures and figuring out what works for you.
You might not be able to pull off the purple-gray hair that Kelly Osbourne has,
but maybe that color would look good on your eyes.
The point is, don’t let your airbrush makeup rut stop you from
looking your best. You can find inspiration anywhere – the color of your best
friend’s eyes, the blinged-out collar on your dog, the shiny chrome fender on
your car. It doesn’t matter what makes you look at things differently, as long
as you are willing to try.

Accent Colors Aren’t Just For Nails
Any woman who has had a manicure or pedicure in the last few
years (or watches Drop Dead Diva) knows about the accent nail. If you have a
red manicure and a lone white nail, that’s an accent nail. Just like when you
decorate your home and you paint one wall a different color or you chose throw
pillows that complement your color scheme, you can use accent colors in your
makeup.
Celebrities with Accent Nails |
Obviously, this works great on nails. Use a complementary
color to match your color scheme or use a contrasting color to really make it
stand out. Instead of changing up colors, you can use a nail decal on your
accent finger or even change up patterns – go from a traditional French
manicure to and upside down French mani.
But you don’t have to limit accent colors to just your nails
and fashion choices. You can do this in your airbrush makeup, as well.
For instance, we have three colors of eyeliner pens – black,
brown and green. You can use that gorgeous green as an accent color for your
eyes. Focus your eyeshadow palette on neutrals – either shades of brown and
taupe or grays. Then use the green eyeliner pen like an accent color. Whether
you make a winged line or just line your lashes, this method gives you that bit
of difference in your usual makeup routine.
Then there are adding accents with eyeshadows. This is
especially easy when you use pre-selected sets of airbrush eyeshadows, like our duos and trios. The key is to limit your palette to only one or two main colors and use
a contrasting color for the POP factor. This is especially effective when using
neutrals as the primary shade and then a brighter color such a rich purple or
orange to contrast.
Dramatic Accent with Metallic |
Did you know that you can also use those powder eyeshadows
like a mascara? If you are looking to make a different type of impact, here’s
what you do:
Start with clear mascara, petroleum jelly or even chapstick;
using whatever tool works best for you (fingers, a clean mascara brush, a stiff
makeup brush), coat your lashes with a layer of the jelly. Then use a small
brush to apply the color you desire to your eyelashes. Or, take the small bit
of jelly and some of the powder and mix in a small bowl, then apply to your
lashes like mascara.
Don’t be afraid to try something exotic such as green or
red. A bight color in such an unexpected place is a happy medium between
blending in and standing out.
Metallics are also great to use as an accent. Complement
your softer brown shades with a striking copper stripe on your lids. Make that everyday
black eyeliner and gray shadow more modern with a dash of silver. A little goes
a long way – and a lot makes a powerful statement.
It’s all up to you. Who do you want to be today? Spice up
your airbrush makeup routine with little kick.

Feel Transformed with Airbrush Makeup
Airbrush makeup has been used by professional makeup artists
for years. They have used it on celebrities and non-celebrities, on and off the
red carpet and for subtle looks to complete makeovers.
You have seen hundreds of celebrity red carpet pictures and
they always look so glamorous and amazing. And while these women (and men) are
definitely good looking in person, it still takes makeup to get them red carpet
ready.
For instance, if you ever watched Desperate Housewives, you
might have been amazed at how beautiful those ladies are. Even when they step from the shower (in the show), they still look glowing and natural. But
did you know that their makeup was done by airbrush? Even more than that, did
you know it was done with Luminess Airbrush Makeup?
Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow |
When Johnny Depp gets into character, he goes all the way
in. One of his most iconic roles has been that of Captain Jack Sparrow, pirate in the
Pirates of the Caribbean movies. And how did that role become so iconic? In
part because of his makeup.
And yes, not only was it applied using airbrush makeup, but
it was Luminess airbrush makeup.
Amazing, isn’t it? Just from these examples you can see how
airbrush makeup can be utilized to create whatever look you are going for.
Whether you want to cover the fine lines and discoloration
of the amazing Felicity Huffman or the uneven skin tone and blemishes of Eva
Longoria, you can use your at-home airbrush makeup system to do it.
If you want to take your every day look and kick it up a notch
like the gorgeous Marcia Cross, you can do that with your airbrush makeup kit.
Just feeling like a mess like in the before shot of Nicolette
Sheridan? You can transform yourself in minutes with airbrush makeup.
Or getting ready to rock that costume party? Take a page
from Johnny Depp’s playbook and make yourself into someone completely
different.
Nothing is impossible with Luminess Air and airbrush makeup
technology.

Decorate the Windows to the Soul
We’ve talked a lot
about how to make your skin look great with airbrush makeup. We’ve talked about
how to use the beauty essentials, how to apply the foundation and how to keep
it all in place throughout the day.
But what about the
eyes? The eyes are a big part of what people see when they look at you and you
want to make sure they look fabulous. But how do you do that with an at-home
airbrush system? Let’s talk…
Airbrush Eyeshadows
We will cover
applying airbrush eyeshadow in an upcoming post, but for now, let’s go over the
basics.
We offer airbrush eyeshadows
in individual colors as well as sets. Choosing the best color(s) for you depend
on your skin tone, your eye color and your own taste. Like metallics? Go for
it! Prefer the warm shades of red, yellow and pink? Do it! Want to keep things
a little more subtle? No problem!
The key with
applying airbrush eyeshadow is to take your time. Learn the process because
it’s not as simple as applying foundation, but it’s not rocket science, either.
Start with one color at a time before you move on to blending and multiple
colors. You can watch this video for some pointers and we will post more
pictures and videos on this in the future.
Cream Eyeshadows
Cream eyeshadows
are great for creating long-lasting, rich looks that work for day or night.
Using a small makeup brush, apply it to your lids like you would any eyemakeup.
BONUS TIP: To make it last even longer, take a drop of the moisturizing primer
and use it on your lids before applying the eyeshadow; let dry and then go on
with your makeup routine. For a lighter touch, apply the cream shadows with
your fingertip. Just try to avoid tugging on your eyelid or the skin around
your eyes, as this will distort the makeup and can cause loose skin in the long
run.
Mineral Eyeshadows
Prefer mineralmakeup? We have those, too! To be used wet or dry, these pigments are
incredibly versatile.
Wet your makeup
brush and then shake off the excess water. Dip into the mineral eyeshadow and
then apply to your eyelid. This will give you a richer, smoother look similar
to liquid eyeshadows. Or use dry like regular eyeshadows – whatever kind of
look you are going for, you can create with these mineral pigments.
Beyond Eyeshadow
Don’t forget the
eye liner and mascara! We offer black, brown and green eyeliner pens, as well
as a lengthening mascara. You can use these alone or with your eyeshadow.
The Best Part
And right now, we
are having a pretty amazing sale. There are specials on airbrush eyeshadows,
mineral pigments and the cream eyeshadows. You can also save on eyeliner,
mascara and more. Check out our Back to School Sale!
Back to School, Not Back to Basics
Students everywhere are heading back to class over the next
few weeks. Incoming freshman, returning upperclassmen and graduate students.
And all of them need a way to look their best without a lot of time or effort.
Between classes, studying, internships, campus activities and a social life,
it’s hard to justify spending more than a few minutes on your makeup.
That’s why we are having a Back to School sale right now.
Students, teachers and everyone affected by the return to school can save up to
83% on the tools and products that will get you out the door and on your way.
We’ve Got You Covered

deals for you. We have two bottles on sale for $44, or you can get one of our
new Jumbo Packs.

Airbrush Makeup is Not Just for Professionals Anymore!
Airbrush makeup at home is usually for every day use and a
few special occasions. Professionals use airbrush makeup in tons of places. But
we don’t have to limit our use to just at home…
Prom, Weddings and Special Occasions
Beautiful Bride |
Brides everywhere want to look their best on their special
day. And while you can hire someone to come do your airbrushed makeup, why pay
all that when you can use your at-home airbrush makeup? If you get a system of
your own, not only will you not have to hire a professional and still get that
professional look, but you will still have the system afterwards to do your
day-to-day makeup.
Flawless Bride |
Before the wedding, practice with the system and make sure
you know how to use it. Practice with different foundations and different
methodologies – does it look better with the Glow? With the blush under or over
the foundation? Do you want a little extra shimmer or the natural look? Test it
out and learn what works for you.
But weddings aren’t the only special occasions where
airbrush makeup can be used to create flawless, glamorous looks and still be
used everyday. Imagine prom season, job interviews, giving speeches and
quinceaneras – all special occasions where you want to put your best foot forward.
Beauty Pageants
How do those ladies always manage to look like professional
makeup artists did their makeup even when you know they did it themselves?
Airbrush makeup! You don’t have to be a professional beauty queen to look like
one.
You can get that beauty pageant glow with a combination of
our Silk or Satin foundations, Boost-It and Glow. For extra sparkle, add a
bit of bronzer or shimmer.
Professional Headshots
At some point in your life, you will likely need to do a
professional headshot. Graphic design firms charge a fortune to touch up
headshots for business cards, flyers and brochures. Keep your costs down by
having that airbrushed look without the benefit of a computer.
Camera-Ready Makeup |
For cameras, you want to go a little heavier with your
makeup than usual. So make sure you are getting full coverage when you apply
your airbrush foundation. Stay away from shimmers and metallics, since those
don’t photograph as well (as our makeup artist likes to say, they put a runway
of lights in the wrong places). If you usually do a more natural look, stick
with that, just use a little heavier hand. You want your features to stand out,
not blur together.
Video/TV
We live in an HD world. More and more people are realizing
that video cameras can accentuate your every pore, wrinkle and sag. Before you
show your face on camera, apply your makeup with an at-home airbrush system.
Did you know that Luminess Air has been used in movies and TV shows all over the world?
Same rules apply for makeup in video as it does in pictures.
Amp up your normal look a bit more so your features don’t blend together on
screen. It’s hard to over do it for TV makeup, so don’t be afraid.
Professional Dancing/Sports
Gorgeous Dancer |
We’ve all seen those shows with the professional dancers and
they always look amazing. Even under hot lights and amazing dance moves, they
will look flawless and professional. What’s the secret? You guessed it,
airbrush makeup. But you don’t have to have a sponsor paying for everything to
get that kind of look. Amateur dancers, gymnasts and other competitors can
benefit from the staying power of airbrush makeup.
Halloween
Makeup and Halloween go together like peanut butter and
jelly. But you don’t have stop at just looking gorgeous - you can create some amazing special effects
with airbrush makeup. Here are some great examples:
Fashion Shows/Shoots
Models get airbrushed in their photos, but they also use
airbrush makeup to start off as gorgeous as they can. You can see amazing
airbrush makeup at many fashion shows and photo shoots. In part because it can
stand up to the heat of the lights as well as last all day, this is the makeup
the professionals use. And you can, too, at the next Mother/Daughter Fashion
Show fundraiser!

Look Professional and Cover Those Tattoos
We’ve talked about this before, but sometimes those tattoos
you love so much don’t go over so well in a professional environment. This
morning, I saw a young man who had to wear a long sleeve shirt button to the
neck and gloves because he worked in an environment where the tattoo on his
hands and arms would be acceptable to many of his customers. Keep in mind, it’s
August and it’s hot. Don’t be that guy – use your at-home airbrush system to
cover up those tattoos without having to wear extra layers of clothing.
So think of your airbrush makeup system as a one-time
expense that pays itself off quickly. You will find so many uses for your
at-home airbrush makeup that you will wonder how you ever lived without it!
